The personal experience from one of the Coimbra Group scholars

30 March 2020

Vladislav Dronov, PhD (in law), associate professor at the Department of International and European Law of National university “Odessa law academy”, Ukraine

I would like to tell you about my research stay at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania, in October-November 2019, which was organized within the framework of the Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood.

When confronted with a call for applications for research stays, we often here researchers saying that “it’s too difficult”, “it’s too long” or even “it’s impossible”. But today I can say it really is possible and it is wonderful! My area of interest is related to the legal regulation and practices of higher education and while in Iasi, I was focusing specifically on the legal and practical aspects of higher education. During my stay at the Ioan Cuza University I had visits and conversations with heads and employees of the international department, the secretariat of the faculty of law and its dean Mr. Septimiu Vasile Panainte, as well as several other departments: students service and alumni affairs, management, Media, HR and research and project management. I also had the opportunity to meet the Rector of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, Prof. Tudorel Toader.  Now a Memorandum of Understanding on academic cooperation between Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi and the National University “Odesa law academy” has been signed.

In addition to the various meetings I had at the university, I also had the opportunity to attend the Rectors’ Seminar “Universities in a Changing Europe: 30 years since the Fall of the Iron Curtain” in Iasi. Many of the current issues related to my research area were discussed, so that was extremely interesting for me. I got acquainted with representatives from the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, the Coimbra Group and other unuversities.

And I gave a lecture about the legal system of Ukraine for student Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi.

It’s difficult to even imagine a better way to do research in this area!

I participated in the Ceremony “Dies Academici” and other events devoted to the anniversary of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi and went on a number of excursions to visit the city’s highlights.

My stay in Iasi was fruitful and interesting! I encourage all researchers to apply for a Coimbra Group Scholarship!
