Coimbra Group signs the Jena Declaration on Sustainability

09 September 2021

Coimbra Group joins its member Friedrich Schiller University Jena and a network of 30 renowned international institutions in a call for a clear change of strategy to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a new cultural approach.

An initiative of Prof. Benno Werlen of the UNESCO Chair on Global Understanding for Sustainability at the University Jena, the “Jena Declaration” aims to draw greater attention globally to the way in which human activities are embedded culturally, regionally and historically.

Signatories therefore call upon all relevant political and scientific institutions, including funding agencies, to use the UN “Decade of Action” as a time to ensure that the cultural dimension is at the core of sustainability programmes. The full text of the “Declaration of Jena” is accessible here.

The “Declaration of Jena” is in full line with the priorities of the Coimbra Group for the academic year 2021-2022 as displayed in the August editorial of our newsletter. The Executive Board warmly invites the Rectors of other Coimbra Group Universities to endorse the declaration.

The kick-off event of “The Jena Declaration” takes place online on 9 September at 3pm CEST and can be followed live on Youtube via this link: https://www.thejenadeclaration.org
