Founded in 1985, and formally constituted by Charter in 1987, the Coimbra Group is Europe’s oldest university network. It brings together long-established, research-intensive, multidisciplinary universities of outstanding international reputation, fostering collaboration and innovation across the European continent.
Committed to strengthening their academic and cultural ties, the Coimbra Group supports its members in all their missions – education, research, innovation, and service to society – while advancing
internationalisation. By actively engaging with EU policies and programmes, it has become a trusted partner of the EU institutions.
Central to its mission is the promotion of best practices through the exchange of experience and the development of joint initiatives. Acting as a dynamic forum for cooperation and strategic reflection, the network enables member universities to share expertise, collaborate on innovative projects, and shape the future of European higher education and research.
