Conference on Research Careers 2025 and Conference on Freedom of Scientific Research

11 November 2025

The third edition of the EU Conference on Research Careers will take place on 11-12 December 2025 in Brussels and online. Day one will focus on policy updates and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the European Charter (and Code) for Researchers. The full programme is available on the event page. Through plenary sessions and interactive thematic discussions, participants will examine how to connect policy frameworks with practical measures that improve researchers’ working conditions, mobility, and recognition. On day two, several parallel sessions will be held, including the HR Excellence in Research Info Day and three closed sessions on the ERA structural policy on research careers (co-sponsored by the Coimbra Group), on the ERA structural policy on improving the articulation between R&I and higher education within the ERA (co-sponsored by the Coimbra Group), and on the ERA action on research management. These sessions will provide opportunities to discuss with member states, associated countries and other stakeholders how to achieve the expected outcomes outlined in the ERA Policy Agenda 2025-2027.

Closely linked to this event, the Conference on Freedom of Scientific Research, co-organised by the European Commission and the UNESCO, will be held on 10 December 2025. This conference will explore how research is conducted under increasing undue pressures, drawing on personal accounts from scientists who have faced threats, presenting fresh evidence on current trends, and examining how misinformation, surveillance, and AI influence everyday work in laboratories and universities. Speakers will present new findings, discuss ideas for forthcoming EU legislation and share practical approaches that have proven effective across Europe.

Together, these two conferences will provide a forum for dialogue aimed at strengthening Europe’s research landscape and reinforcing its ability to attract and keep talent through strong careers and protected scientific freedom. They will bring together EU and national policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders committed to shaping the future of research careers in Europe. You can register for online participation here.
