Staff Training Week on PhD Employability

25 March 2020

University of Groningen, 25-27 March

PhD, what next? This is a question that quite a lot of doctoral researchers ask themselves, especially as the academia no longer could absorb the number of PhD graduates. In fact, in some European countries the majority of doctors leaves academia and public funded research institutes eventually. At the same time, many early-stage researchers are worried about taking this step, mainly because they did not find or try alternative career paths yet. As it is assumed that universities should accompany PhD graduates in building a career both within and outside academia, the main question that arises is how to do so.
The Coimbra Group Staff Training Week on Doctoral Employability is organised by the Coimbra Group working groups “Doctoral Studies” and “Employability” and will take place at the University of Groningen. It is directed at colleagues working in the field of career services for doctoral researchers and the aims are:
– to exchange on the organisation of career services for doctoral candidates at the participating universities,
– to explore specific instruments of support offers,
– and to exchange on good practices with colleagues.
To help us learn about one another, we will be asking every delegate to prepare a poster about the work your Doctoral / PhD Careers Service is doing. These will be displayed at the conference and uploaded to the Coimbra Group website, giving us all a lasting opportunity to see who is doing what, and to help us connect with colleagues. To encourage and reward your creativity we will be presenting a prize for the ‘overall best poster’ at the conference.
