Arenberg - Coimbra Group Prize for Erasmus Students 2010
It is with great pleasure that the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group informs that on 23 March 2010 Mr Alessandro De Bortoli from the University of Padova was selected as the winner of the 2010 Arenberg-Coimbra Group Prize for Erasmus Students.
The Recommendation from the Selection Committee:
This year, in the face of some stiff competition, the Committee and the Executive Board of the Coimbra Group agreed to award the Arenberg Prize to Alessandro De Bortoli, University of Padova. He is the first medical student to win the award. He went to the University of Bergen for part of his studies as a very deliberate decision to move to a part of Europe very different from his previous experience in Italy, and to test the meaning of a European research area in his own life. Not only did he come to a very vivid appreciation of the value to his own research of this European experience; it has also created very practical outcomes for the treatment of those with certain cardiological problems in Italy, a true trans-European advance which we regarded as eminently worthy of the award.
The award will be presented to Mr De Bortoli by Prince Léopold of Arenberg at a reception on 3 June at the University Foundation in Brussels. |

2 March 2009: The Coimbra Group and European Higher Education after Bologna 2010 - Position Paper
The Coimbra Group Universities have enthusiastically embraced the Bologna Process, as they appreciated the added value of increased transnational transparency. With the present position paper they point towards a number of critical issues that need follow-up in the years to come.
They recommend a shift in attention from structures to contents, and encourage the Ministers of Education to take concrete measures to ensure that the degrees within the Bologna structure are based on internationally comparable learning outcomes. Alternative learning paths have to lead to certificates with titles that differ from those of the standard Bologna degrees.
Moreover they recommend that more transparency is introduced in institutional diversity, genuine support to mobility and permanent attention to the societal role of universities. They are confident that internationally attractive and competitive universities will emerge from the present process, ready to face the challenges of a globalising world.
